A slow or clogged drain is frustrating, but you do not need harsh chemicals to fix it. Chemical drain cleaners can corrode your pipes over time and cost $10-15 per bottle. Try these cheaper, safer methods first.
Method 1: Boiling Water
The simplest fix. Boil a kettle of water and slowly pour it down the drain in 2-3 stages, waiting a few seconds between each pour. This works especially well for grease clogs in kitchen sinks.
Method 2: Baking Soda and Vinegar
Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain and wait 30 minutes. Then flush with hot water. The fizzing reaction breaks down organic buildup.
Method 3: Use a Plunger
A standard cup plunger works on sinks and tubs. Make sure there is enough water to cover the plunger cup, then plunge vigorously for 20-30 seconds. The suction and pressure can dislodge the clog.
Method 4: Clean the P-Trap
Under your sink, the U-shaped pipe (P-trap) is a common clog spot. Place a bucket underneath, unscrew the trap fittings, and clean out any gunk. Reassemble and test.
Method 5: Use a Drain Snake
A drain snake (plumber auger) costs about $15 at any hardware store. Feed it down the drain and twist to grab the clog. Pull it out and dispose of whatever comes up.
Prevention Tips
- Use drain screens to catch hair and food
- Pour boiling water down drains once a week
- Never pour grease down the kitchen sink
- Run hot water for 30 seconds after each use
