How to Replace a Cracked Floor Tile Without a Pro

A cracked floor tile is not just ugly. It can collect dirt, let moisture through, and crack the tiles around it. Here is how to replace it yourself.

What You Will Need

  • A replacement tile (same size and style)
  • Grout that matches existing grout
  • Chisel or flathead screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • Tile adhesive (thin-set mortar)
  • Notched trowel
  • Sponge and bucket
  • Safety glasses

Step 1: Remove the Grout

Put on safety glasses. Use a grout removal tool or flathead screwdriver to carefully chip out the grout around the cracked tile. Take your time to avoid cracking neighboring tiles.

Step 2: Remove the Cracked Tile

Start in the center. Use a chisel and hammer to break the tile into pieces. Work outward to avoid damaging adjacent tiles. Remove all old adhesive from the floor.

Step 3: Apply New Adhesive

Spread tile adhesive on the floor using a notched trowel. Create even grooves in the adhesive for a level stick.

Step 4: Set the New Tile

Press the new tile into place. Make sure it sits level with surrounding tiles. Use spacers if needed. Let the adhesive cure for 24 hours before walking on it.

Step 5: Grout and Clean

Mix grout to a peanut butter consistency. Spread over the gaps with a rubber float, working diagonally. Wipe excess with a damp sponge. Let it cure 24 hours.

Prevention Tips

  • Use felt pads on furniture legs
  • Drop heavy items onto a towel, not the tile
  • Fix cracked grout early to prevent tile damage
